Florian Trauner holds the Jean Monnet Chair EXACT (Explaining EU Action in Counter-Terrorism) and is the director of the VUB’s Master Programme on European and International Governance. He is also a Visiting Professor at the College of Europe, where he teaches a course on EU migration policies (with Sandra Lavenex). His research interests concern EU justice and home affairs (in particular migration, asylum, return and counter-terrorism policies), linkages between European home affairs policies and foreign affairs/external relations, and dynamics of EU decision-making. He has implemented different research project focusing on the Western Balkans and West Africa. A graduate of the Universities of Vienna and Copenhagen, he received his PhD in 2008 (with distinction) and his habilitation in 2015.

His work has appeared in journals such as West European Politics, the Journal for European Public Policy, the Journal of Common Market Studies, the Journal of European IntegrationInternational Migration, the European Journal of Migration and Law and the European Foreign Affairs Review. He is author of ‘The Europeanisation of the Western Balkans: EU justice and home affairs in Macedonia and Croatia’ (Manchester University Press) and editor of ‘Policy Change in the Area of Freedom, Security and Justice: how EU institutions matter’ (Routledge, with Ariadna Ripoll Servent). Again with Ariadna, he also edited the ‘Routledge Handbook of Justice and Home Affairs Research’, a book with 39 chapters comprehensively covering the theories, policies and actors in this field. He is currently participating in the Horizon-2020 project MINDb4ACT on tackling radicalization and violent extremism led by the Elcano Royal Institute. He also (co-)directed projects funded by the United Nations University (UNU-CRIS) and the Austrian Science Fund (FWF).

Florian Trauner has had permanent, visiting or associated positions at the University of Vienna, Renmin University of China (Beijing), Sciences Po’s centre d'études européennes, and the Paris-based EU Institute for Security Studies. He acted as an external expert for the European Commission, the European Parliament, the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the International Centre for Migration Policy Development. In spring 2020, Prof. Trauner will chair the seventh edition of the ‘European Union in International Affairs’ (EUIA) conference. Organized by five academic institutions (VUB, ULB, UNU-CRIS, Egmont Institute and Warwick University) and gathering around 450 participants, #EUIA20 will constitute a major forum for academics and policy-makers to debate the role of the EU in the turbulent realm of international affairs.
