PhD Researcher Environment and Sustainable Development

Aslak Veierud Busch joined the IES as a doctoral researcher in the Environment and Sustainable Development cluster in October 2019. Aslak is researching the EU's Arctic policies, investigating whether the Union has been able to have an impact and influence on the region. He is broadly interested in Arctic politics, environmental affairs, EU foreign policy and political theory, particularly on the interplay between geography, conceptions of space and politics.

Aslak holds an MA (Hons) in International Relations from the University of Edinburgh, and a Research MSc in European Studies from Maastricht University. Additionally, he has attended courses at The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø.

He spent six months at the Norwegian embassy in Tallinn as a trainee, where he closely monitored Estonian politics with a special focus on the impacts of decarbonisation measures on energy security and employment in eastern Estonia. Until September 2019, Aslak was also a research assistant at EAST, a Jean Monnet research network examining the security and trade relations between the EU and Asia.

Aslak speaks English and Norwegian fluently, and is learning German and Dutch.
