Sigrid Winkler currently is a Senior Associate Research Fellow for European Foreign and Security Policy at the Institute for European Studies (IES) of Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) in Belgium as well as a recipient of the Republic of China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs Taiwan Fellowship Program 2011/2012.

She earned her PhD in Political Science in July 2011 at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel with her thesis “A Question of Sovereignty? The EU’s Policy on Taiwan’s Participation in International Organizations.” For this purpose, from August 2006 to July 2011, Sigrid was working at the IES as a PhD researcher. During this time, she was also hosted as a Visiting Fellow at the Center for Chinese Studies in Taipei, Taiwan, from February to October 2008.

Sigrid’s research is generally focused on the European Union’s interaction with Taiwan and China, and particularly on the EU’s policy on Taiwan’s attempts to participate in international organizations, such as the World Trade Organization, the World Health Organization and the United Nations. In her most recent work, Sigrid’s focus also included EU-China cooperation in global governance, for instance in international climate change negotiations.
