Development and democratization in the new Gambia: African and European perspectives

18 Jan 2019 12:00

This Policy Forum features an input by Mr. Badara A. Joof, the Minister of Higher Education, Research, Science and Technology (MoHERST) of The Gambia and Prof. Dr Faqir Muhammad Anjum, the Vice Chancellor of the University of The Gambia (UTG). Minister Joof will present his country’s perspective on the linkages between development cooperation and higher education. The Gambia is a country undergoing a major transformation. After the reign of former president Yahya Jammeh (1994- 2016), the 2016 elections propelled coalition candidate Adama Barrow to power. After 52 years, it was Gambia’s first change of government through the ballot box. What are the opportunities in the New Gambia? How is the new government overcoming development challenges relating not only to education but also migration? What can The Gambia learn from European higher educational systems? How can the EU’s development cooperation support these developments? This Policy Forum provides a rare opportunity to engage directly with senior representatives of the new government of The Gambia.
