The Europeanization of EU Anti-Discrimination Policies. Did it Reduce Ethnic Discrimination in the Member-states?

20 Mar 2013 18:00
20 Mar 2013 20:00

The transposition of the Racial Equality Directive has immensely enhanced legal protection against discrimination on the grounds of racial and ethnic origin throughout the EU. More than 10 years after its adoption, however, the main challenge identified in many Member states is the application of anti-discrimination laws in practice, in particular with regard to access to justice. Polls regularly show the existence of an enormous discrepancy between the levels of discrimination experienced and discrimination and discrimination reported. In this lecture Ms. Uyen Do (MPG) and Dr. Chibo Onyeji (ENAR) will address the many difficulties that explain this discrepancy: several legal, procedural as well social barriers. The speakers will also launch recommendations to EU institutions for moving forward on identified challenges.

  • Uyen Do, Legal Policy Analyst, Migration Policy Group and Managing Editor of the European Network of Independent Legal Experts in the Non-discrimination Field
  • Chibo Onyeji, President of the European Network Against Racism (ENAR)
  • Chair: Dr. Ilke Adam, Postdoctoral Researcher Migration and Diversity, Institute for European Studies (VUB)
