United Nations University Welcomes New UNU-CRIS Director

After nine months of interim Directorship of UNU-CRIS, IES Executive Director Anthony Antoine passes on the baton to Professor Madeleine O. Hosli as Director of the UNU Institute on Comparative Regional Integration Studies (UNU-CRIS). Anthony will stay on as part-time Deputy Director, at least until the new Director has settled, and possibly beyond. Prof. Hosli starts her activities at UNU-CRIS as of 1 June and will stay on for an initial period of 5 years. She will be able to draw upon the formidable work that founding Director Luk Van Langenhove accomplished over the past 15 years. Dr. Van Langenhove continues his academic career at the IES where he spearheads the H2020 EL-CSID project.

Prof. Hosli has a distinguished career researching and teaching on European integration, international organisations, and international political economy. She has been a Professor of International Relations at Leiden University (Netherlands) since 2007. Previously, she was an Assistant Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (Netherlands); Visiting Assistant Professor at the University of Michigan (USA); Chargée de Cours at the Graduate Institute of International Studies (Switzerland); and a Senior Lecturer at the European Institute of Public Administration (Netherlands).

“The new orientation of UNU-CRIS, and its close collaboration with the Free University of Brussels and the University of Ghent, will help establish the Institute as a significant regional ‘hub’ of academic research on the management of international and regional public goods”, said Prof. Hosli. “The Institute aspires to analyse and offer solutions to current challenges ranging from migration, to environmental degradation, to threats to economic and political stability and peace.”

Prof. Hosli holds a PhD degree from the University of St. Gallen and studied as a Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Michigan. She has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals, and is author of The Euro: A Concise Introduction to European Monetary Integration (2005) and co-editor of Decision-Making in the European Union Before and After the Lisbon Treaty (2015).

“Prof. Hosli joins the UNU family at a moment of significant renewal”, said UNU Rector and UN Under-Secretary-General David M. Malone. “Her impressive academic record and long career in the region’s academic community will serve her well as she leads UNU-CRIS forward in its second generation of activities.”

These second generation activities started well with the initiation of five new research projects, two of which will be led by senior researchers at the IES.
