KF-VUB Korea Chair Senior Researcher Tongfi Kim presented at the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium

On 5 September 2018, KF-VUB Korea Chair Senior Researcher Tongfi Kim presented "Fundamental strategic problems in nuclear disarmament of North Korea: How Europe can help ameliorate them" at the Seventh Consultative Meeting of the EU Non-Proliferation and Disarmament Consortium. Dr. Kim discussed strategic problems of North Korea’s nuclear disarmament and why we have not seen much progress after the US-DPRK summit in June this year. The Trump-Kim meeting was historic in certain aspects but was also criticized for being vague and not having the term, Complete Verifiable and Irreversible Dismantlement (CVID) of North Korea's nuclear weapons program. The talk focused on why “verifiable” and “irreversible” were not included in the joint statement from the summit meeting, and why it is difficult to have the so-called CVID. Dr. Kim then explained how Europe might be able to ameliorate the strategic problems as a participant in multilateral diplomacy and as an outsider to East Asian geopolitics.
