10th years of EU law in Tampere by prof Kalimo

The Trump election and BREXIT were the hot topics that got a group of sixty international students quickly warmed up in the middle of a snowy Tampere in February. The occasion was the EU law course of IES Jean Monnet Chair Harri Kalimo, for whoom this was the 10th anniversary of the course at the University of Tampere, where he is also an adjunct professor (docent). The temperatures reaching -20° made it quite concrete to explain to e.g. the Spanish, Chinese and Brazilian participants to the course about European diversity: theories on harmonizing the rules on, for example, agricultural policies and energy efficiency cannot escape the realities of the physical world. These realities can be quite different in Athens and in Tampere. Exploring the means, scope and future of EU integration against this wintery backdrop, the group came to a common conclusion: cool judgment is required by the decision-makers to find the right balance between diversity and uniformity in the Union under these challenging times.
