Prof. Dr. Harri Kalimo is a Senior Research Fellow at the IES, responsible for internal market related questions. At the VUB, Harri holds professorships (ZAP) at the faculty of law and criminology and in the faculty of economic, political and social sciences, and is associated with the Master program on Human Ecology. He lectures on the EU internal market and interest representation (EuroMaster programme), and on environmental law and policy (Master on Human Ecology).

Harri is also a Visiting Fellow at Yale University, an Associate Professor at the Turku School of Economics (Finland). He is a visiting lecturer in Monash University Law School (Melbourne, Australia) and Tampere University (Finland), teaching there Economic Law of the EU and (general) EU law, respectively.

Harri’s current research projects at the IES deal with sustainable consumption (ASCEE Project, FP6), EU’s media and communications policy, as well as interest representation in the EU. In Yale and as part of the INSEAD Group on IPR Harri’s research focuses on extended producer responsibility and its role in different models of federalism. His writing has dealt with environmental, constitutional and trade law, as well as competition law and legal theory. His major work is “E-CYCLING—Linking trade and environmental law in the EC and the U.S.”.

Harri has academic and non-academic working experience from multiple disciplines, fields of work and geographic locations. A lawyer and an economist by training, he holds a Master’s Degree in Economics from Turku (Finland) School of Economics (1989-1994) and a Master’s Degree in Law from Turku University Faculty of Law (1992-1998). He obtained his doctoral degree in law from the same faculty in 2004. Harri’s academic experience is from various visiting positions in the Harvard Law School, Institut d’Études Européennes (Université Libre de Bruxelles), New York University School of Law, and Yale University School of Forestry and Environmental Studies.

Prior to turning full time to academic life in 2006, Harri has held non-academic posts in Nokia Corporation, varying from managerial duties in global product marketing projects (1994-1995) to that of a Legal Counsel (2001-2003), responsible for supporting the Mobile Music and Mobile Enhancements business units of Nokia. In the latter position, his focus areas included e.g. IT law, contract law, intellectual property rights, product liability and competition law. Between these two positions (1998-2000) Harri also served as the Legal Counsel in Nokia Corporation’s office of European Union governmental affairs. He was also the Legal Counsel horizontally responsible for environmental matters.

In addition to his native Finnish, Harri speaks English, Swedish, French and German, and is working on his knowledge of Dutch. Harri’s hobbies include various kinds of sports, and he is a trainer for the Finnish children’s sports group “the Flying Finns”.
