Summer School. The European Decision-Making Process

Summerschool jointly organised by the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, the Diplomatic Acacemy of Vienna and the University of Vienna


 

Monday 4 - Friday 15 July 2011

Two weeks of intensive study on the European decision-making process, geared towards students that have a background in (international) politics and/or (European) law.

Study one week in the heart of Europea, i.e. at the Institute for European Studies of the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where the theory of the decision-making process can be translated into practice: students will get a theoretical framework linked to study visits to the European Commission, the Parliament, and the Council. The one week study in Brussels is complemented with a one week study/worskhop at the Diplomatic Academy of Vienna, in collaboration with the University of Vienna. The Summer School will be concluded with simulation exercises involving all participants.

Course Content: History and Institutions of the European Union, The European Decision-Making Process, The decision-making process in Economic and Monetary Issues, The decision-making process in the field of Justice, Freedom and Security, The decision-making process in CFSP, The role of the Social and Economic Committee, The role of the Committee of the Regions, Legal and constitutional issues, Lobbying and interest groups, visit to the European Parliament, visit to the European Council, visit to the Belgian Federal Parliament: European issues, introduction to conflict theory and negotiation and, as mentioned above, simulation exercises to conclude.

Registration fee is set at €925 for students from accession and CEE-countries (including the 12 new EU-members plus Albania, Azerbaijan, Belarus, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Croatia, Kyrgistan, FYR Macedonia, Moldova, Russia, Serbia-Montenegro, Tadjikstan, Turkey, Turkmenistan,  Ukraine and Uzbekistan), €1,390 for students from any other country, and €2,040 for any person who graduated before 2009.

Registration fee includes daily lunches in Brussels and Vienna, travel from Brussels to Vienna (one way), and study visits. It does not incluse housing. However, we strongly recommend you to enroll for our additional accommodation programme both in Brussels and in Vienna. We do understand, though, that people living in Brussels or Vienna may wish to stay at their own place.

Participation is limited to no more than 35 students. Acceptance is at the registration of the organizers, and will be announced by 3 May 2011 by confirmation email to those registered. The applicable registration fee will be confirmed to accepted participants by email upon acceptance to the programme.

Cancellation Policy: More than 45 days before arrival: no cancellation charges; Between 45 and 30 days before arrival: 50% cancellation charges; Between 30 and 15 days before arrival: 75% cancellation charges; Less than 15 days before arrival: 100% cancellation charges.
