European Economics

The role of the research cluster “Economics” at the IES is to conduct high quality research concerning European Economics not limited but focused on the following topics:

  • globalization
  • international capital flows and foreign direct investment
  • international trade
  • welfare economics and the development aspects of economic activities in EU.

The ultimate goal of the economics cluster is to share and to disseminate the research output with academia and society as a whole by publishing research papers, journal articles and books.

Currently, one senior (Dr. Selen Sarisoy Guerin) and one junior researcher (Cem Tintin) carry out two main research projects within the abovementioned fields in the economics cluster at the IES. The researchers in economics cluster also benefit from other running research projects and researchers in different clusters at the IES such as the environment and sustainable development cluster given the variety topics and researchers in this cluster.

Dr. Selen Sarisoy Guerin is working on several research projects related to determinants and impact of international capital flows, foreign direct investment and international trade. Ongoing research projects include the impact of Belgian foreign direct investment outflows on domestic firms’ total factor productivity, employment and gross output; impact of legal institutions on FDI flows; trade openness and financial development and institutions and international capital flows. Selen has also worked on the impact of bilateral investment treaties on EU outward FDI, EU’s new trade policy competence;the enlargement process of the European Union and its economic impacts, the impacts of Free Trade Agreements on the EU member states.

Cem Tintin is writing his PhD thesis in the cluster by conducting research in four different topics under the theme of “international trade and foreign direct investment”.
