IES Research - Environment and Sustainable Development

This research cluster conducts high quality and policy-relevant research, education and academic services in the selected focus areas of work, combining in particular political science and law.

The cluster covers a wide range of topics with particular emphasis on climate change, various aspects of sustainable production and consumption, energy, biodiversity and the management of genetic resources, trade and the environment, environmental liability and damage, and maritime and marine issues. In doing so, it analyses relevant developments in EU and international law and relations, compares relevant national law and policy in the EU and beyond, explores governance arrangements and institutions, and addresses environmental rights.

The cluster is lead by Academic Director Sebastian Oberthür and Senior Research Fellow Harri Kalimo and is supported by one Post-doctoral Researcher (Koen Van den Bossche), ten junior researchers ( Armelle Gouritin, Claire Dupont, Justyna Pozarowska, Radostina Primova, Ioannis Spyridakis, Florian Rabitz, Thuy Van Tran, Alexander Daniell, Laura Boone and Lisanne Groen) and two visiting fellows (Thomas Sattich and Katja Biedenkopf).

The Environment and Sustainable Development research team at the IES co-organizes the Environmental Policy Forum with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP), the cluster is also actively involved in the IES Lecture Series and holds Environmental Discussion Groups on a regular basis and open to the public.

The next Environmental Policy Forum will take place on 21 May 2012 and will cover "EU prospects in the Arctic" (more details to follow).
