Jean Monnet Centre of Excellence

The Jean Monnet Chair Project at the IES "Springboard Brussels 2015" focuses on teaching the modes of EU foreign policy innovatively and excellently to a wide cross-section of students. Springboard Brussels 2015 ensures first that students positively benefit from high quality teaching on EU foreign policy and secondly that academics, students and civil society are beneficially influenced via innovative blended learning format. The impact of its activities will help propel teaching and learning on EU foreign affairs more effectively into the VUB-IES’ inter-institutional relations with other universities and to more genuinely connect with civil society elements via blended learning.

First, the IES constitutes the focal point for teaching European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) and coordinates advances MA programmes, including the renowned LL.M. in International and European Law and the MSc in European Integration and Development.

Second, it coordinates key exchange programmes (Study Abroad, Brussels Programme on European Foreign Policy and a Postgraduate in European Policy-making). As a pioneer of blended learning, the IES has developed an innovative disctance-learning platform on the European Union. From online leaning, the Educational Development Unit has branched out to produce webinars and podcasts.

The IES also provides a number of Academic services to disseminate its research and to stimulate academic and public discussion on topical European Issues. It regularly organises events such as the IES Lecture Series, Policy forums, the biannual EU in International Affairs Conference, and other conferences and workshops for academia and/or the interested public. Further outputs include the IES Publications series (Plagrave), IES Policy Briefs, IES Annual Report and the monthly Newsletter, which can be received via e-mail.
