IES Research: Migration Policy in Detroit

German Marshall Fund

Richard Lewis (Institute for European Studies Vrije Univeriteit Brussel) and Fred Pearson (Peace and Conflict Studies Wayne State University) have been collaborating across the Atlantic to set up the seminar envisaged in their German Marshall Fund of the United States project.

The aim of the project is to bring together mostly practitioners in the area of migrant integration in Brussels and the Detroit region and especially migrants of Muslim extraction and identify best practice on both sides of the Atlantic. It has to be stressed that this does not necessarily imply that issues relating to Muslim migrants are more difficult to deal with than any other migrant community. It is rather that the problems may be different.

The Migration and Diversity team are planning a follow-up meeting to be hosted by the Brussels Parliament which will probably take place in late summer 2010. This meeting will be focused on education issues affecting the immigrant community in Brussels.
