Geopolitics, Grand Strategy and Contemporary Europe
This project applies the concepts of geopolitics, geostrategy and grand strategy to the study of contemporary Europe. It investigates the relationship between geopolitical change and grand strategy in contemporary Europe, paying particular attention to the balance between the grand strategies of Europe’s most powerful member states and the nascent grand strategy of the European Union.
A growingly tumultuous Eurasian landmass is characterized by the rapid rise of China, a more assertive Russia, growing volatility in the broader Middle East and Central Asia, and the increasing concentration of the US on the Eastern half of Eurasia. This research project assesses the impact of an increasingly multipolar global and regional international environment upon the landscape of European grand strategy, broadly understood. It concentrates on the relationship between the geostrategic priorities of the EU and those of its leading member states (Britain, France and Germany), both globally and in respect to specific regions. Particular attention will be paid to Europe’s strategic puzzles vis-à-vis the ‘contiguous’ geopolitical corridor that connects the Middle East, the Caucasus/Central Asia and East Asia.
