The New EU Climate Policies: between Copenhagen and Cancun

On the 26th of March, The Institute for European Studies (IES) and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) are jointly organising a one day training seminar on "The New EU Climate Policies. Between Copenhagen and Cancun". The seminar will present the international framework of climate change negotiations, with a special focus on the EU climate policies. Furthermore, topics such as ETS and carbon markets, as well as mitigation in developed and developing countries will be addressed. The seminar will end with a panel discussion on the outcomes of the Copenhagen summit and the EU's international role, bringing together representatives from NGOs, industry, European institutions and academia.

Identity Construction in Europe: A Discursive Approach

A new working paper has been published in the IES Working Paper Series. Nikki Slocum-Bradley, who is a postdoctoral research fellow at the Institute for European Studies, is the author.
Proposing a discursive approach to studying identity, this paper presents Positioning Theory as a theoretical framework for conceptualizing the construction of identity in discourse. The Positioning Diamond is employed to analyse the discourse surrounding the Danish Euro referendum.

Is the EU's Governance 'Good'?
An assessment of EU Governance in its partnership with ACP States.

A new working paper has been published in the IES Working Paper Series. Nikki Slocum-Bradley and Andrew Bradley are the authors. This paper examines both the processes and outcomes of governance in the context of the EU’s relationship with ACP States within the period of the Cotonou Agreement (CA). It discusses and assesses a variety of governance mechanisms, including the European Commission’s use of the governance concept, EPAs, manifestations of partner preferences, the EDF, the revision of the CA, and Fisheries Partnership Agreements.

NEW IES Book: The New Climate Policies of the EU

To celebrate the launch of the latest edited volume in the IES books series, the IES organises its next Environmental Policy Forum on Wednesday 10 February.

Mr. Arthur Runge-Metzger will present a keynote address on EU Climate Policy Post-Copenhagen. His presentation will focus on the prospects for EU climate policy after Copenhagen, covering both internal policy and the Commission's view on the next steps at the international level.

Testing limited environmental liability against human rights requirements

A new working paper has been published in the IES Working Paper Series. Armelle Gouritin, who is a PhD researcher at the Institute for European Studies, is the author. This paper claims that the right to property, as enshrined in Article P1-1 of the Human Rights Convention, could be used to challenge the limited environmental liability provisions of the international frameworks.

'The European Union in International Affairs 2010 '
A Garnet Conference

The multidisciplinary GARNET Conference ‘The European Union in International Affairs’ will provide a forum for discussion and exchange of ideas among the growing number of scholars that take an interest in understanding the interface of EU and international politics and law. It will be open to all relevant disciplines and sub-disciplines, including (international) law, international political economy, economics and history. The Conference will also continue to foster exchange between the scientific and the policy communities, especially through keynote addresses by senior policy makers and a number of policy-link events featuring academics as well as policy makers. The Conference broadly covers all aspects relevant to understanding the EU in international affairs, including implications for and effects of the structure of the global order , in order to allow for active participation by as many scholars as possible working on relevant subjects.
