The Institute for European Studies at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel (IES) and the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP) kindly invite you to the Environmental Policy Forum:

                                      "Prospects for an Environmental Tax Reform"

This event will take place

on Monday 15 June, 12:00-14:00

at the IES, Pleinlaan 15, 5th floor, 1050 Brussels.

David Gee, Senior Adviser at the European Environment Agency (EEA)

will present the EEA’s work on environmental tax reform (ETR), introducing the rationale behind ETR, portraying lessons from successful case examples and exploring routes for future further implementation, taking into account opportunities and threats related to the current financial crisis.

Samuela Bassi, economist at the IEEP

will present some key insights from the ‘Study on Tax Reform in Europe over the next decades: implication for the environment, for eco-innovation and for household distribution’ that IEEP, in collaboration with other partners, is carrying out for the EEA. The presentation will focus on the legal feasibility and political acceptability of a radical ETR. Insights on possible legal and political approaches to stimulate ETR across the EU, such as the use of enhanced cooperation and the Open Method of Coordination (OMC), and on the perceived potential and barriers of ETR will be portrayed and discussed, on the basis of inputs from questionnaire replies and interviews received from ETR experts and national and international organisations.

The programme will start at 12:00 with a lunch reception, followed by the presentations and a debate with the audience as from 12.30.
