Summary

In collaboration with the Institute for European Environmental Policy (IEEP)

Following on from the successful IES/IEEP Autumn Lecture Series on "The EU and the Fight against Global Climate Change", that took place between October and December 2008, the Institute for European Studies is delighted to welcome Jos Delbeke (Deputy Director-General, DG Environment) as a key-note speaker on the 21st January 2009. Mr Delbeke addressed the external and internal implications of the EU's recently adopted climate and energy package.

In December 2008, the European Union adopted its climate and energy package to achieve the targets of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving energy efficiency and increasing the share of renewable energy sources in the Union by 20% by 2020. The package includes legislation on the revision of the European Emissions Trading Scheme; effort-sharing targets for reducing emissions; national targets for increasing the share of renewables; reducing CO2 emissions from cars; reducing greenhouse gas emissions from fuels, and fitting power plants with CO2 capture and storage technology. Agreement on the package meant that the EU could credibly retain its claim of leadership on climate change policies on the international scene.

One month after the adoption of this legislation, Mr. Delbeke has addressed the implications of the package for the EU, both internally and externally, and what it means for the global fight against climate change. The lecture took place on Wednesday 21 January 2009 at 18:00.
