On 15 February, the VUB hosted a conference on the integration at EU level of environmental concerns into other policy areas such as transport, energy and development cooperation. It was organised by EPIGOV, a research project on the modes of governance used at all levels, from local to global, to promote environmental policy integration. Nineteen research institutions from ten European countries have come together under the auspices of EPIGOV to organise three thematic conferences, of which this was the first.

In the framework of the Spring Lecture Series on European Identity, IES and the University of Kent at Brussels  welcomed Professor Susan Condor of the Department of Psychology of the University of Lancaster to present the findings of a study done in the Greater Manchester area of Northern England. The study concerned the attitudes of working class Muslim youth of Pakistani and Bangladeshi ethnic origin towards their local, British and European identities.

For the 6th lecture in the current series on European Identity, IES welcomed the lawyer and anthropologist Professor Marie-Claire Foblets on March 22nd 2007. She delivered a fascinating and very clear lecture on the private international law aspects of Islamic personal law especially in the area of marriage and divorce where there appear to be numerous conflicts in the practice authorised by the law in Islamic countries and the practice in EU Member States.
