In-depth knowledge about the European Integration Processes
|
A programme under the auspices of the faculty of economic, social & political sciences and Solvay Business School, in cooperation with the Institute for European Studies
The post-war European integration process is the central focus of the Master-after-Master in European Integration and Development (hereafter the ‘Euromaster’). The Euromaster’s overall orientation is to provide students with an advanced academic training to gain a thorough understanding of the European integration process in its economic and political dimensions. The specific focus on European integration is warranted because the European Union has an increasing impact on a wide variety of public and private actors within and beyond its borders. Given the EU’s influence on domestic and international contexts, an analytic and academic understanding of its functioning is much needed.
The programme is particularly oriented towards providing an academic, theory-based understanding of the policies, the institutions and the socio-economic processes in the European Union. The presentation of factual and practical knowledge on EU institutions and policies is important but does not constitute the essence of the program. The program emphasises the importance of theoretical and conceptual tools to interpret and analyse aspects of European integration. The program offers ample information on the EU, its institutions and its working practices, all of which are presented within a clear scientific framework. The program does not aim to provide a vocational training.
The Euromaster is oriented towards both full-time students as well as professionals, who seek to deepen their understanding of the EU. For this purpose the Euromaster classes are organized after working hours to enable students and professionals to attend the lectures.
The Euromaster offers a common core of courses on the essential features of European Integration. Students will further enhance their knowledge in the area of ‘
Economic Integration’ or in the domain of ‘
Political and Social Integration’.
Our location in Brussels, in many ways the “Capital of Europe”, offers the exceptional opportunities for networking and contact with EU decision-makers.
The composition of the faculty is a balanced mix of high level European officials and other policy makers (all of them have also a research background and a Ph.D.) and our own university staff specialising in European issues. All these professors guarantee the highest possible educational standards. The Euromaster program is organised by the
ES Faculty and the
Institute for European Studies (IES). Students can thus benefit from the support and expertise of the faculty staff and from the research activities at the IES.

“The best part of studying European Integration and Development at the Vrije Universiteit Brussels is the creative approach to the issues discussed and the cultural diversity of the programme which is attended by students from all over the world. The topics I have learned about in depth have proven to be excellent theoretical underpinnings for my job. Great friendship developed through the frequently required group work.”
