Dr Jan Völkel involved in intensive international research activities on Arab parliaments

Jan Claudius Völkel has successfully finished first research stays connected to his Marie Skłodowska-Curie project on “The role of national parliaments in the Arab transformation processes”. From 23 April to 10 May, he conducted interviews with local and international stakeholders in Tunisia, among them the Head of the EU Delegation in Tunis, Patrice Bergamini, and member of parliament Wafa Makhlouf. Besides, Jan gave topic-related lectures at the Université de Carthage, Faculté des Sciences Juridiques, Politiques et Sociales de Tunis.

Then, Jan participated in a workshop on “Parliamentary Control of the Executive” in Rabat on 11 May, organised by the University of Copenhagen, where he spoke on “The blessing of having a vibrant opposition”. All of June he spent at the prestigious Centre for Contemporary Middle East Studies of Southern Denmark University in Odense (Denmark). He was also engaged as guest lecturer in a summer school on “The Challenges of Democratic Transitions in the Arab World” at the University of Copenhagen.

For the second half of 2017, Jan plans further project-related research stays in Egypt, Jordan and Morocco, and will present parts of his findings at the 11th Pan-European Conference on International Relations in Barcelona.
